No confidence in Ursula von der Leyen – MEPs Lynn Boylan and Kathleen Funchion

Sinn Féin MEP’s have again voted no confidence in Ursula von der Leyen in the European Parliament this afternoon.

Both Von der Leyen and her commission have consistently acted against the best interests of people across Europe. It’s time for them to step down.

Lynn Boylan MEP said:

“Both Kathleen Funchion and I have once again voted to censure Ursula von der Leyen today.

“Sinn Féin are the only Irish party who have done this at every opportunity.

“Not only did she stand by Israel’s side and refuse to act while they committed a genocide, but she has also tried to ram through the Mercosur agreement, as well as failing to secure a good deal for Europe in negations with the US.

“All of this comes while her ‘Pfizergate’ scandal still hangs like a cloud over her leadership, and her commission presses forward with their attempts to further militarise the EU.

“It’s clear that Von der Leyen and her commission do not have the best interests of the people in the EU, their climate, their health and their future.

“She has allowed so much harm to be done in her drive to appease big businesses and it is clear that her, and her commission must go.”

Kathleen Funchion MEP said:

“In July this year we voted no confidence in Ursula von Der Leyen, and today we have voted the same way.

“Her refusal to act while a genocide unfolds in Palestine is utterly indefensible.

“The European Union remains Israel’s largest trading partner. The EU-Israel trade agreement should have been fully suspended long ago, yet von der Leyen has chosen complicity over intervention.

“She does not represent the millions of Europeans who see clearly that what is happening in Gaza is genocide. Through her inaction, she has become complicit in grave violations of human rights and international law.

“Von der Leyen has also been determined to push through the Mercosur trade deal undemocratically.

“It is the first time that the Commission has split the trade deal away from the overall agreement. This is to get around the veto that some countries would use to protect their farmers.

“This deal would be devastating for Irish farmers and the environment.

“A vote for von der Leyen is a vote to sell out Europe’s small farms to big industry, and to continue giving political cover to war crimes.”
