Lynn Boylan MEP slams rogue European Commission move to scrap greenwashing deal

Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan has slammed the rogue actions of the European Commission as it scrapped the new greenwashing laws.

MEP Boylan said:

“The decision by the European Commission to scrap the greenwashing laws is totally disgraceful.

“It has been revealed that the European People’s Party (EPP), of which Fine Gael is a member, along with two far-right groups wrote to the Commission and pressed them to drop these laws.

“The Commission does not have the right to act on the direction of political groups – this is once again a case of Von Der Leyen’s Commission acting outside its remit.

“These laws were about protecting consumers who are willing to pay more for sustainable products from being misled by companies that try to pass off unsustainable products as being sustainable.

“This would have protected consumers from being ripped off and stopped big corporations from undercutting small businesses focused on sustainability.

“These were consumer protection measures and were voluntary for businesses, so arguments about simplification simply do not stack up here.

“Ursula Von Der Leyen and her rogue Commission cannot continue to act outside their remit.

“Governments across the EU must demand that they are held to account for their disgraceful actions.”
