The legislation to scrap the triple lock will be brought forward to the second stage by the government this Wednesday.
Lynn Boylan has once again called out this motion as “as an utterly reckless course from Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael”.
Boylan, the Sinn Féin MEP for Dublin, is Ireland’s only MEP on the security committee, and pointed out that even Fianna Fáil back benchers have voiced their opposition to this move.
“Scrapping the triple lock is an incredibly reckless move.
“Every poll shows repeatedly that Irish people value our neutrality, and the triple lock is a key part of protecting it.
“We know that our government can’t be trusted to stand up to international pressure on global issues, so it’s vital that we don’t leave decisions around deployment of our troops solely in their hands.
“The Triple lock is a vital fireguard between Irish neutrality and an increasingly militarised EU.
“I urge everyone to contact their local TDs and make it clear that you don’t want them to support this motion.
“Protecting neutrality should be a priority for all TDs, regardless of party.”
