Dog Welfare Legislation needs to be passed without delay

Sinn Féin MEP for Dublin, Lynn Boylan has called for the new Government to pass her dog welfare legislation without delay.

Speaking after a visit to the DSPCA animal centre in Rathfarnham, Lynn said;

“It is deeply frustrating that legislation I introduced back in 2022 which passed without opposition in the Seanad has been left languishing due to Government inaction.

“During the debates, the Government accepted the need for the legislation as it would close a gap in the existing law regarding the rehoming of dogs seized on welfare grounds.

“Currently dogs found straying or seized for being unlicensed can be rehomed if they are not claimed after 5 days.

“However, dogs seized on welfare grounds such as from illegal puppy farms, puppy smuggling or neglect must be held until the legal cases conclude.

“During my visit to the DSPCA, I heard of one case of multiple dogs that were seized and are still waiting over 26 months to find out if they can finally get their forever homes or whether they will be returned to their abuser.

“Not only is this unfair from an animal welfare perspective, it also places a huge financial burden on animal rescues. This situation is replicated across the country.

“At a time when, animal rescues are buckling from the pressure of the number of dogs abandoned and surrendered, this legislation would make a tangible difference overnight.

“Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael said they supported it when it was introduced so they now have a responsibility to do the right thing and enact it.
