Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan has criticised the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) for delaying the rollout of Dynamic electricity tariffs.
The Dublin MEP, and Ireland’s only member of the European Parliament’s Environment Committee, said:
“It’s extremely disappointing that the CRU are delaying the rollout of Dynamic electricity tariffs.
“This delay is a clear breach of EU regulations. It prioritises the short term interests of big energy companies over the interests of workers, families, and SMEs.
“Dynamic tariffs mean people could pay less for their energy when there is a surplus of renewable energy on the grid, which can even occasionally turn prices negative.
“The current so-called “smart tariffs” are not fit for purpose, with price comparison websites not even letting people enter their consumption information. This means that any benefit is totally lost.
“Other EU countries are already using green energy to help lower bills and to make their energy grid more efficient.
“This work is a key part of a fair and just transition. The CRU needs to reverse their decision and help ensure that Ireland is not left behind by bad decision making.”
