Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan has said that the EU must use the COP29 negotiations to prioritise a fairer approach to funding global climate change efforts, particularly those of low-income countries.
The Dublin MEP said:
“Ensuring that countries have the proper financial support to help them to decarbonise and tackle climate change must be a priority for the COP29 negotiations.
“It must not be another wasted opportunity that sees lower-income countries punished, while wealthy states try to delay taking the real action that is needed.
“While there has been an increase in overall climate funding, it is concerning that it has been done mainly in the form of loans.
“Climate financing should be helping low income countries to take steps needed to transition towards becoming more green, and to adapt to the impacts of climate change without placing undue burdens on their fragile economies.
“COP29 must be about working together to tackle the global climate crisis.
“Fossil fuel giants, who are solely interested in the pursuit of profit, have no place in trying to influence these decisions.
“It is deeply disappointing that commissioner Hoekstra has not taken steps to prevent these corporations from attending COP and possibly impeding positive steps to tackle the climate emergency.”
