Boylan welcomes progress on EU law to stop Greenwashing

Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan has welcomed progress in the EU’s new greenwashing law.

The Dublin MEP is one of the negotiators on this law, which will ensure companies and products that claim to be ‘green’ are actually sustainable.

Lynn said:

“I welcome that the parliament voted to progress the new Greenwashing law to the next step.

“This allows us to begin negotiations with representatives from governments across the EU to have this law adopted.

“Greenwashing is a concern for many people in Ireland, it takes advantage of peoples desire to make more sustainable choices by claiming to be ‘Ocean friendly’ or ‘Carbon Neutral’, with some companies using this to justify charging a higher price to consumers, without a way for their claims to be verified.

“I have regularly challenged companies for greenwashing their products and services. This law will make companies check their science and also make sure they clearly show how their products are green or sustainable.

“I am determined to keep working with my colleagues to ensure that the Greenwashing law will provide protection for consumers and for the planet.”
