Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan has welcomed an opinion from the International Court of Justice on Israel’s aid obligations to Gaza.
The Dublin MEP said:
“I welcome the ICJ opinion that Israel is under an obligation to agree to, and facilitate relief schemes provided by impartial aid groups, and that they must meet the ‘basic needs’ of the population, to ensure they have everything they need to survive.
“After 2 years of relentless genocide, Israel must do nothing to impede the flow of humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza.
“This should include doing nothing to impede the indispensable work of UNRWA, whom Israel disgracefully attempted to smear, as part of their campaign to cut off vital aid and support to Palestinians.
“We’ve already seen two recent ICJ decisions against Israel, the provisional order of January 2024, and the advisory opinion of July 2024, as well as the ICC arrest warrants issued for Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant for their war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
“Despite this, the EU has not taken a single action against Israel.
“Israel cannot be allowed to ride roughshod over international law and human rights without consequences.
“There must be justice, and consequences, for their grave breaches of international law.
“If we fail to upload International law for one, that we put it in danger of becoming meaningless for all”.
