Boylan named as negotiator for European Parliament’s priorities for COP 31

A Dublin MEP will help negotiate the European Parliament’s priorities for the next COP conference.

Lynn Boylan, the Sinn Féin MEP for Dublin has been appointed as one of the negotiators for the parliament’s position and priorities for COP 31.

Bolyan, a member of the ENVI committee has said that the EU “must use its resources and influence to lead the way in tackling climate change.”

“We’re already seeing the major impacts of a 1.5 degrees global temperature increase, yet we’re on course to 2.5 degrees of an increase.

“The EU can, and should lead the way in tackling climate change and reaching our climate goals.

“Working to advance the electrification plan, improve funding for climate mitigation, protecting the rights of climate refugees, and Indigenous Peoples, as well as ending the influence of fossil fuel lobbyists should all be priorities for the EU.”

Lynn added that a truly just transition, where the biggest polluters bear the largest responsibility is a key part of meeting our climate targets.

“When ordinary people feel like they’re constantly being hit with taxes and charges, rather than big companies then it turns them away from playing an active part in tackling climate change.

“Ensuring that we have a real just transition, and that this COP does not become a wasted talking shop must be priorities for the EU.
