Average house price in Dublin hits €500,000

The average price for a home in Dublin is now at €500,000 according to figures from the Central Statistics office.

According to Lynn Boylan MEP, these figures will be another blow to many ordinary people watching the dream of home ownership drift further out of reach.

The Sinn Féin MEP for Dublin insists that repeated failures by the government, pointing to constant failure to miss house building targets and their narrow focus on expensive, build-to-rent private developments, are driving these high costs.

“In just four years, prices have jumped €100,000, how is that sustainable?” MEP Boylan asked.

“A typical house in Dublin requires an income of €100,000 to afford, in some areas it even requires €150,000.

“For most young couples, that is simply out of the question. Nurses, teachers or Garda simply can’t afford homes in this market.

MEP Boylan added, that the government talks about supply being the answer, but pointed out that if the houses being built are costing this much, then the majority of people will still be locked out.

“We need to see real action to tackle the affordability of housing in Dublin, and across the state before these prices spiral further out of control.”
