Lynn Boylan MEP welcomes progress on animal welfare laws

Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan has welcomed progress in setting up new EU laws around care for cats and dogs.

The Dublin MEP said:

“I’m very happy to see the latest vote for building these new laws has passed.

“These new laws would set up common rules for the welfare of cats and dogs; like ensuring they are microchipped and have records in a national database.

“We made some important additions to this law, like ensuring that online ads have to include the proper information to identify and trace the animals, and ensuring that these rules apply to all commercial animal breeders, as well as limiting the use of cages and ensuring that animal caretakers receive adequate training.

“While many of these rules are already in place in Ireland, this law will ensure that there is a common approach to protecting the welfare of cats and dogs across the EU.

“The Agriculture Committee now needs to take on these positive changes and make sure that EU law protects all our pets.”
