Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan has slammed the government moving closer to fully ratifying the CETA trade deal.
The Dublin MEP spoke after cabinet approved Simon Harris’s legislation to see the deal fully ratified, despite much controversy and opposition.
Boylan said:
“The government’s determination to fully ratify the CETA deal is totally senseless.
“They have claimed that this is to help secure trade with Canada in the wake of Trump’s Tariff chaos.
“What they aren’t saying though, is that this trade with Canada is already happening – the only part of the deal that isn’t operating is the private investor courts.
“These are courts that give big companies the power to sue states if they do anything to interfere with their profits.
“Why are Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael so determined to give these powers to big businesses like vulture funds?
“Fully ratifying the deal only serves the big corporations who are already raking in billions in profits.
“The government needs to stop and respect the Irish High Court’s original ruling on this issue, rather than trying to sidestep it.”
